How I became a sound healer

When first introduced to sound I lived in Mexico and my mentor’s husband was a professional sound healer.

Not the kind with the crystal bowls — but one who used all native Latin American instruments to create a soundscape that would take you into other worlds.

The two of them would perform together, her on vocals and leading us in a guided meditation through gorgeous visualizations, and he would provide the sound — birdsong and otherworldly sounds you couldn’t quite place until after the soundbath where he would demonstrate each of the instruments.

I loved receiving soundbaths from them, it was always such a treat to come into their home or the beautiful spaces they would host in. We’d settle in and they’d transport us to these beautiful landscapes within ourselves. I always left feeling lighter, more free. I never thought of being a sound healer, it wasn’t something that I thought was calling me. Back in 2021 I was super interested in learning about breathwork — specifically psychadelic breathwork after having some profoundly transformative breathwork sessions.

A friend sent me a breathwork training that was happening in our local area (Tulum, Mexico) and it just happened to be a training in Breath, Sound, and Yin Yoga. I thought nothing of the other two, but was endlessly curious about the breathwork.

The training was wonderful and I learned so much from our three facilitators, and I left feeling curious about sound healing, but nothing out of the extraordinary. It felt like a notch in my belt, another training complete. I had recently completed a Reiki Training, and an Akashic Record Training as well. It was the season of learning, and I was ripe to soak it all in like a sponge.

At the time the Akashic Records were fascinating to me and I dove headfirst into learning how to do readings for myself and others. Sound had disappeared somewhere in the background.

Then, when I visited Mount Shasta for the first time, alchemy bowls were present in my life. All my friends had them and I was endlessly playing them — just for fun. It felt like just a thing I did that felt joyful and I could lose myself in the endless circling of the bowls.

A year later when I moved to Shasta, I would frequent the Crystal Tones store almost weekly and got to know the wonderful people who run the place. I’d sit on the plush white carpet and pick out my favorite bowls for the day. I noticed that each day I’d pick drastically different sounding bowls based on what was happening internally for me. The bowls would reflect my internal world.

Fast forward to moving to Joshua Tree where I had every intention of continuing my Intuitive Readings and Retreats, but I could feel a nudge towards getting my own set of bowls. I put it off for months, ignoring the message and not really understanding why I would need my own bowls.

Finally, around Thanksgiving I pulled the trigger on a set of seven white crystal bowls that ended up sounding divine. I pulled them out and started playing immediately, under the Christmas tree set up in the living room. I asked everyone to gather round so I could practice and could feel myself drawn to the ease and flow of playing for extended periods of time.

I had recently joined the local yoga studio and asked one of the owners if she had any ideas where I could play the bowls for the community. She suggested I play them there, and the following week I did a trial to start to teach a class. Thus, Celestial Sound was born — a love of these beautiful bowls that came into my life at the perfect time and Oracle Readings to see what energy you leave with at the end of the class.

Almost two years later, the class still runs and we have a beautiful community that comes weekly — and calls it “Sound Church” because it’s every Sunday afternoon.

I like to say the bowls found me, at a time when I didn’t realize how I could use sound technology to ground and regulate people back to their clarity + alignment.

It’s been a blessing and a gift to offer sound, and now I offer Sound Privates, 1:1’s, and will soon be offering a Sound Healing Training for facilitators ready to open their own practice.

I’m curious, have you ever experienced a soundbath before? What was your experience?
